Cycling to Lake Titisee — and why it's quicker than driving
There’s one sentence about this holiday apartment that almost nobody believes the first time they hear it: Lake Titisee is closer by bike than by car.
That isn’t a figure of speech or a marketing trick. It’s simply geography. If you drive, you have to go the long way round: 16 kilometres, a good 19 minutes. The cycle path, on the other hand, runs through the valley and takes 8 kilometres. Exactly half.
What that means in practice
On an e-bike you’re at the water in about 30 minutes. That’s roughly the time you’d otherwise spend in summer looking for a parking space at Lake Titisee. We rent out two e-bikes, and to be honest, this route is the main reason why.
One detail makes the maths even better: the Strandbad, the lido at Lake Titisee, charges no admission. It’s open daily from 9 am to 7 pm. So there’s no reason to plan your day around the ticket booth — ride there, jump in, ride home when it gets cool.
How long it really takes
All times here are measured from our front door, not estimated, and double-checked with two independent route planners:
| Destination | by bike | by car |
|---|---|---|
| Strandbad Titisee | 8 km · 30 min | 16 km · 19 min |
| Titisee station | 7.8 km · 31 min | 14 km · 19 min |
| Lenzkirch village centre | 2.4 km · 7 min | 2.5 km · 4 min |
| Schluchsee | 12.6 km · 50 min | 13 km · 15 min |
Titisee station is the second piece of good news in this table. Leave your bike there and you can carry on by train without ever getting into a car — and with the guest card, travel is free throughout the Black Forest.
Where the bike is the worse choice
To keep the maths honest: with the Feldberg, it’s the other way round. By car it’s 25 minutes to the valley station. By bike it’s 20 kilometres and 580 metres of climbing — that’s not an afternoon ride but a day trip, and you should plan it as one.
Lake Schluchsee, too, is more of an outing than a ride by bike: 50 minutes compared with a quarter of an hour by car. Lovely, but not something you do on the spur of the moment with a towel and swimming things.
When you get back
After your ride, the apartment is at ground level, there’s a terrace with heat lamps for the evening and a small Finnish sauna in the garden. The e-bikes have their own storeroom, and your own bike fits outside under the covered parking space.
